Swimming & going underwater
Railborn’s swimming system includes movement underwater.
What it is
Railborn’s swimming system includes movement underwater. Washbear says it considered keeping players at the surface, then chose underwater swimming because it plans exploration beneath the sea. The same announcement warns that players probably will not survive long in water early in the game. It establishes a traversal feature while keeping the ocean’s detailed progression open.
How it was revealed
Update 012 announced swimming on 7 June 2026. The studio describes it as a system it had postponed before deciding how much movement it should allow. Its explanation separates an implemented design choice, swimming below the surface, from a broader plan for undersea exploration. Features described in these updates may still change during development.
Source language: English. Original wording preserved.“Since we do plan for you to explore under the sea we decided to have under water swimming.”
How it connects
Swimming is directly connected to the studio’s plan for exploring beneath the sea. The early-game warning also places it within survival progression, although the post does not name the equipment or upgrade that would make longer visits possible. It offers no explicit link to Nexus oxygen or tank capacity, so those systems cannot supply a diving rule by inference.
Open questions
The announcement does not explain why early water survival is limited, how long it lasts, or which conditions improve it. It also supplies no swimming controls, depth limits or underwater destination list. The confirmed answer is that players can go below the surface; a diving guide would require a separate explanation of the dangers and equipment involved.
