Railborn and Early Access

Railborn is not in Early Access yet — and the “Early Access” label on its store page does not mean it is playable.

As of 22 September 2026, the Steam page reads “Coming Soon To Early Access” and “This game is not yet available on Steam”. There is no purchase button, no demo and no price. The label describes how the game will launch. Update 015 now targets Early Access for summer 2027, without an exact day.

What follows is the studio’s own Early Access statement, quoted from the “What the developers have to say” block on that page. It is the single most detailed thing Washbear Studio has published about its plans, and almost none of it is quoted accurately elsewhere.

What the studio commits to, question by question

QuestionHow long will Early Access last?Store heading: “Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?”What the studio says“We plan to be in Early Access from 1 to 2 years.”This is the studio's only public statement about duration. It is a plan, not a commitment, and it counts from a current summer 2027 target rather than an exact day — so it cannot be turned into a finish date for anything.
QuestionWhat will the Early Access version contain?Store heading: “What is the current state of the Early Access version?”What the studio says“The Early Access version of the game will contain: Full train track world to travel and explore […] Multiple environments […] Train building and management […] Survival gameplay […] Save / Load system […] Technological upgrades to be unlocked […] Much more!”The same answer opens by warning that the build “will probably contain a few bugs, crashes, corrupted save files — and maybe even a little frustration”, and tells anyone who prefers a polished game to wait for 1.0.
QuestionHow will the full version differ?Store heading: “How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?”What the studio says“We are targeting for the full version of Railborn to have: Ideas suggested by community […] Complete world consisting of multiple environments […] A robust technological tree upgrade your train […] Finished story […] Meaningful game mechanics that improve as you play deeper in the game […] Polished and bug free! (mostly)”Note the verb: targeting. Every item on this list is an intention, and the studio ends each of its development posts with the same disclaimer — features may change before and during Early Access.
QuestionWill the price change?Store heading: “Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?”What the studio says“We are determining the launch price and our target price be a fair reflection of what we think the game is worth. The price will increase before the end of Early Access.”Two facts here, and they are worth separating. There is no announced price at all. And the studio has already stated the direction of the only change it commits to: upward, before Early Access ends.
QuestionWhy Early Access at all?Store heading: “Why Early Access?”What the studio says“Our previous game, Parkasaurus, launched in Early Access and—thanks to the support of our amazing community—was brought to a full 1.0 release. Now, the two of us are back and would love your help once again to bring Railborn from Early Access to 1.0.”Washbear Studio is two people, and this is their second game. Parkasaurus is the precedent they name themselves — an Early Access title that did reach 1.0.

What “1 to 2 years” does not tell you

It is the most quoted number about this game, and it is the easiest to misuse. The window runs from the start of Early Access — and that start has only a summer 2027 target, not an exact day. A duration measured from a movable target cannot produce a 1.0 year, and it cannot tell you when Early Access begins.

Update 015 targets Early Access for summer 2027. As of 26 September 2026, the official Steam store page lists 2027, without an exact day or month. What the studio has said about a release date →

How the studio says it will involve players

This is the part of the block that describes the arrangement rather than the product. Quoted in full, with one cut marked:

“We regularly ask the community what features they are looking for and what aspects of the current game they think should be expanded. We regularly read the Steam forums, our socials, and conversations in Discord to generate ideas. […] We plan to share our Trello board of development with the Community so they can see what we are currently working on and help us decide what features to work on next. The Community will be the first to beta test pre-Early Access builds and be provided forms to offer their feedback.”

Two things are worth reading carefully. The Trello board is announced in the future tense — we plan to share — so there is no public development board to look at today. And “the Community will be the first to beta test pre-Early Access builds” describes the closed testing that is already running, on a signup list that is currently closed. What is missing from this block, and matters

  • No price. Not a number, not a range, not a currency. The studio says it is still determining one.
  • No exact start day. The store page still gives none; Update 015 targets Early Access for summer 2027.
  • No platform beyond Windows. The store lists Windows only; macOS and Linux are both marked unsupported, and no console has been announced.
  • No published system requirements. Every field on the store page reads “TBD”. What the studio has said about hardware →

The systems that the Early Access build is said to contain — the world, the train, survival, upgrades — are documented here from the studio’s monthly posts, one system at a time. Start with the train modules →
