Mainline & off-road tracks
Railborn distinguishes mainline and off-road tracks in the map design described by Washbear.
What it is
Railborn distinguishes mainline and off-road tracks in the map design described by Washbear. Mainline appears in white and off-road in orange; the less-maintained tracks reduce train speed and look different in the world. This is a published travel distinction, not just a decorative map legend. Weather-affected tracks are explicitly outside the baseline comparison in that update.
How it was revealed
Update 010 introduces the distinction on 5 April 2026 while discussing how to communicate a branching railway network on a map. The studio calls it the current iteration of its design. The colours therefore describe that development version, while the post leaves room for later changes to how junctions, elevation and track conditions are presented.
Source language: English. Original wording preserved.“We added mainline track as white, and orange for off-road tracks. Your speed decreases on these less maintained tracks, and also the visual in game changes.”
How it connects
Information towers reveal track layouts, and the Track Switcher displays upcoming intersection choices relative to the direction of travel. Track types add a different layer: the condition of a route affects movement along it. Reading a revealed layout and selecting a branch are connected activities, but the studio has not published a complete map legend combining all these signals.
Open questions
No speed penalty, repair procedure or engine-specific exception is given for off-road tracks. The announcement also does not say that an orange route is always inaccessible or worse for every journey. Distances, destinations and train capabilities remain separate considerations. A measured route comparison would be needed before offering travel-time estimates or efficiency advice.
