What it is

Biomes on your train are grown through plots placed across train cars. Washbear Studio says each biome starts with “a simple plot,” where you sow “mote producing seeds” found in the world and add other ecological elements that influence crop output and growth. As more crops of a specific biome are added, “a natural train car biome starts to emerge.” The description makes the plot, the crops, and their surrounding ecology the building blocks of a train-car biome. It does not publish a complete list of compatible plants or ecological requirements, so the studio’s examples should not be expanded into a full recipe. Features may change before and during Early Access.

How it was revealed

Washbear Studio revealed the biome system in its 5 May 2026 announcement, a spoiler-marked post about Biomes and Motes. The studio introduced the question of how motes are grown, then explained plots on different train cars, seeds found in the world, ecological elements, and the emergence of a natural train-car biome. The post warned readers that it contained real spoilers about a system the studio itself would want to discover in play. Its closing caveat is part of the record: any features written about might change before and during Early Access.

Exact quote (verbatim)

“Alright, how do you grow motes? Well, by creating biomes on different train cars of your train. […] Every biome starts with a simple plot. Now what you put in that plot is up to you. At baseline you sow mote producing seeds that you find in the world. But what else you add can affect your crops. There are other ecological elements that influence the output and growth of your crops. As you add more crops of a specific biome, a natural train car biome starts to emerge.”

How it connects

Washbear Studio connects this biome system to train cars, plots, mote-producing seeds, crops, ecological elements, mote output, mote vaults, and technology unlocking. Seeds found in the world feed the plot; what else is added can affect crop output and growth; and the studio says depositing motes into the corresponding mote vault rebuilds the biome and unlocks technology items. These are the relationships the studio has named. No additional link to a train module, a travel rule, or a separate survival system is established in the announcement.

Open questions

Does a train-car biome already exist, or does the player grow it? Washbear Studio says the process starts with a simple plot on a train car: sow mote-producing seeds found in the world, add ecological elements, and grow the natural biome by adding more crops of that type. The same announcement says motes deposited into the corresponding mote vault rebuild the biome and unlock technology items. As of 3 September 2026, it has not published a complete planting recipe, a universal environmental checklist, or a full catalogue of unlocks.
